RE

At Whiteways, we aim for our pupils to be tolerant and empathetic members of both school and wider society. Our RE curriculum equips children with a range of skills to allow them to understand different religions and the beliefs of others. Pupils will leave school with a clear understanding of the beliefs and practices of a range of religions worldwide and within the community of Sheffield. Pupils will be able to articulate their own beliefs and will have developed speaking and listening skills during discussions.

In RE pupils learn from religions and world views about different ways of life in local, national and global contexts. They discover, explore and consider many different answers to questions about human identity, meaning and value. They learn to weigh up for themselves the value of wisdom from different communities, to disagree respectfully, to be reasonable in their responses to religions and world views and to respond by express insights into their own and others’ lives. They are encouraged to develop enquiring minds, and to think rigorously, creatively, imaginatively and respectfully about their ideas in relation to religions and world views.

The National Curriculum states the legal requirement that: “Every state-funded school must offer a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based, and which:

Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and

Prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.”

The RE curriculum at Whiteways is planned according to the Sheffield Agreed Syllabus (SACRE) This means that Whiteways is consistent with the local authority and children have an interesting, thought provoking and progressive experience of religious education. The curriculum is organised into half termly units with an overarching question and assessment objective taken directly from the SACRE.

“Our vision is to provide an excellent primary education that gives our children the very best chance of succeeding in life.”
