Spanish

At Whiteways, we teach Spanish as our chosen Modern Foreign Language. We have a specialist Spanish teacher who teaches all children in Key Stage 2 across both schools. This ensures that all pupils receive high quality and consistent teaching allowing them to be successful language learners. Mrs Kachra-Frolish teaches our Spanish Curriculum across KS2.

Many of our children have English as an Additional Language and are able to thrive when learning a new language in their Spanish lessons. We aim to foster this throughout Key Stage 2, providing opportunities for pupils to be successful in expanding their knowledge and understanding of a widely spoken language. We want our pupils to be able to use and apply their language skills in the future and to be able to gain an understanding of other languages and cultures, appreciating similarities and differences. We aim for our pupils to be able to use and apply basic conversational Spanish when introducing themselves and giving opinions about a range of things such as food and drink, favourite colour, favourite day and hobbies. In addition to this, we also aim for our pupils to learn some basic grammatical conventions about word order at sentence and paragraph level, gender, singular/plural as well as nouns, verbs and adjectives. We ensure that pupils are taught to apply their skills in both oral and written form.

Pupils will also have opportunities to access bilingual Spanish/English dictionaries throughout Key Stage 2. We believe that learning about the culture, traditions and geography of Spanish speaking countries is as important as the actual language learning therefore, pupils will develop and build on their intercultural understanding alongside their language learning.

“Our vision is to provide an excellent primary education that gives our children the very best chance of succeeding in life.”
