SEND
Here at Whiteways Primary School, we believe ALL children, regardless of need or disability, have the right to an outstanding education, opportunity to fulfil their potential and strive to become independent citizens.
At Whiteways, a primary consideration for quality first teaching of children with SEND is teacher knowledge and understanding of needs, and strategies that can be put in place to remove barriers to learning. Strategies and interventions are implemented in conjunction with the child’s outcomes on their ‘Support Plan’, ‘Extended Support Plan’ or ‘EHCP’ and any written reports from outside agencies, such as; Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychology, Learning Support Teachers, Hearing Impaired Services, Autism Team and Physiotherapists to name a few. Colleagues, both in school and external agencies, who are supporting a child with SEND are in constant dialogue about the effectiveness of the strategies in place to support the child’s progress, tweaking and developing as required.
We strongly believe parents and carers play an integral role in shaping a child, regardless of need, and their support and interest in their child’s education is exploited and celebrated. Staff at Whiteways strive to build strong and trusting relationships with all pupils and families, resulting in frequent and reassuring communication with families of pupils with SEND.
Whiteways Primary School houses a specialist Nurture Provision (The Acorn Room), a specialist Speech and Language Provision (The Caterpillar Room) and an Integrated Resource (The Hive). Knowledgeable and experienced staff run these provisions, as well as providing advice and support to mainstream class teachers and support staff when exploring how different individual needs can be met most effectively.
Children with SEND have many strengths that are often superior to their typically developing counterparts. A different ability, rather than a disability. We believe as practitioners, we should not only support the needs but celebrate and nurture the strengths of all pupils.
